The concept of reiki comes from Japan. The word expresses the universal life energy.
In reality Reiki, being very old cure, was known way back, and was actually written in the old Sanskrit Sutras more than 2500 years ago. In the 19th century, it was rediscovered by Mikao Usui. Thus, since those days now we speak of the Usui System of reiki. Here you can learn more about a similar Usui system: reiki attunement
When you give Reiki to yourself or to others, you gently lay your hand on, or slightly above the body. The giver, or the one who provides the reiki-energy, is the channel for the energy. So through the hand this energy is given to who ever is receiving it.
