If you are like the rest of the world today, when you hear the words spirituality or spiritual life, you probably imagine monks in a monastery or nuns in a white robe. These days most people consider the word spirit as something that should not be discussed outside in public. People generally think that a spiritual life must be a life of self sacrifice and renunciation. This is the furthest from truth! Ironically, as you will realize eventually, a true spiritual life not only takes you to heights of ecstasy you have never dreamed of, it also brings you freedom you could never imagine.
Even though there are many faiths that hold many ideas, basic spirituality is based on the following principles:
a. There is an all pervading intelligence that is the Creator of this universe.
b. All reality is created from this Divine Intelligence or Energy.
c. There is a reason for all things that happen and a purpose for this universe to exist.
d. To put it simply, the reason and purpose is evolution. It is the goal of the universe to evolve from lower states of being into higher states of intelligence and energy.
e. We as human beings have always felt the painful separation from God or the Divine Intelligence since our birth into a body of flesh and bones. Trying to fill the void of separation in their hearts (sometimes even unaware what it is they are feeling), humans have struggled in many different ways. Some of these less than fruitful ways are controlling others, trying to dominate over people, food, alcohol, sex, drugs etc.
f. When we find our way back again and reconnect with God, we experience an absolute sense of freedom and peace.
g. When we experience this amazing bliss and freedom, we are automatically driven to help others experience the same.
In short, this is what the goal of a spiritually focused life is about.
Interestingly, once you awaken, you begin to notice that there are many invisible forces that shape the way your life unfolds! These strange forces begin to make itself known more and more by making many beneficial circumstances happen. These are the miracles or serendipities that people on a spiritual journey commonly seem to experience and talk about. As you focus more and more with discipline and dedication on your spiritual journey, these miracles and serendipities begin to happen at ever greater extents. It’s almost like God takes on an active interest in your everyday life to fulfill your desires. No wishes are small, no prayers are unimportant. All are answered and fulfilled, in the most perfect ways. Something that is beyond the wildest dreams of most people, you begin to enjoy a freedom that is simply incredible!
When people see intensely focused individuals on a spiritual journey like a yogi on a mountain, what they do not realize is that they are looking at someone who has given away the paltry material gains for a kingdom of cosmic treasures. Someone who has received a freedom beyond time and space in exchange of our false sense of physical freedom. Someone who has sacrificed paltry physical pleasures to receive divine ecstasy! When you look at it this way, you suddenly understand the amazing stupidity of most white collar slaves who are trading their life for a credit card and a house. A spiritual life, however, does not mean that you have to give up all your material assets and gains. You can keep or make whatever riches you want to and still be very intensely focused on a spiritual path, yet sometimes it makes no sense to carry all the material chains that our societies bound us with.
A true spiritual life allows you to gradually prepare your heavily programmed mind to see beyond the material obvious and perceive the higher truths. Gradually you begin to understand the deeper laws of creation and use them in this physical plane. When you do that, as I said, life becomes miraculous. The whole universe comes together to help you move forward and realize your dreams. For now, there is no difference between your dreams and the dreams of the universe. The dreams of God.
