What are Panic Attacks?

Panic attacks are typical disorders in the United States. Studies show that panic attacks affect about one-third of American adults every year. In terms of the whole population word wide, there are 1 out of 75 people suffering from panic attacks.

Here is a brief description of what panic attacks are: Panic attacks are sudden and recurrent surges of intensive and serious fear. They are often accompanied by physical symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, or abdominal pain. Some other physiological symptoms that panic attacks bring are:

o chills or hot flashes

o nausea

o feeling of choking

o perspiration

o tingling and numbness in the fingers

o shaking

o a rapid heart rate

Panic attacks can cause a feeling of desperation in those that experience them. They could even feel like they're going crazy or even feelings of dying when experiencing an attack. According to medical professionals, these things aren't unusual A lot of the physical symptoms experienced during panic attacks are identical or comparable to signs of much more serious ailments of the heart, lungs, intestines and central nervous system.

Usually, those who suffer from panic attacks will have repeated visits to a physician before they are diagnosed as having panic attacks Some of them even suffer from panic attacks for many years before they know that what they're experiencing is a real curable disease.

An individual has a chance of getting anxiety attacks through heriditary reasons. This just means that a person can be afflicted by panic attacks because he/she inherited it. But even though the chance of experiencing panic attacks is beyond anyone's control, there are a few other serious conditions that can accompany panic attacks. Other reasons are, alcohol addiction, depression and ofcourse, drug abuse.

Panic attacks can also cause a person to be so afraid of different situations, that he / she will avoid areas and circumstances where the panic attacks took place. They could believe that a certain situation or experience triggered the panic attacks when in reality the panic attacks just happened to happen in a certain location or situation.

This fear of anything that might cause panic attacks can be very disabling. People that encounter panic attacks will often do my way through their power to prevent any kind of panic attacks. This means that a lot of people will restrict their lives to such an extent that they can't or won't do everyday routines like shopping or driving. Or they may only do such activities with a trusted family member or friend.

Panic attacks can be easily treated with the useof certain medication and know therapies.Medical treatment for panic attacks involves digesting anti-anxiety drugs like Valium, Atavan or Xanax daily. These drug treatments are part of a class called benzodiazepines that are recognized for their sedative and muscle relaxant attributes. They're very effective for treating panic attacks, but when used for quite a long time, sufferers can get a tolerance to them or become reliant on them.

Cognitive therapy is one psychotherapy used for treating anxiety attacks. Cognitive behavior therapy for treatments for panic attacks involves knowing unhelpful patterns of thinking and reacting and replacing these with more beneficial and realistic thoughts.
